Default Unable to connect to... anything

Alright, dunno why I'm posting this now since it's been going on so long, but anyway... I am unable to connect to *ANYTHING* to do with GW. When the problem first manifested itself a few months ago, the launcher simply would not connect. I have tried turning off firewalls (even though at this point I currently do not have one other than windows, lawl), and I uninstalled so that I could reinstall only to find out that I couldn't reinstall since you need to connect to anet for that. Basically, I can't connect to anything. This also happens with a few other applications. My computer is completely clean of any spyware, adware, viruses, etc. Any ideas?

umm check your connection if its happening with other stuff. if you're on a router, try resetting it. do a clean install of your computer.

No offense, but if you're formatting and re-installing Windows on your computer to solve a network issue you fail at troubleshooting.

We need more info to help you:
  • How do you connect to the internet?
  • Who is your ISP?
  • Are you using a standard gateway/router, do you connect directly to your cable/dsl modem, or do you connect via a proxy server?
  • What changed as far as your configuration/software between GW working and not working?
  • Which programs are able to connect and which ones aren't?

Yea, I don't want to reformat and install windows because it's not worth it/shouldn't need to be done. I connect through a home network with 2 other computers on it. Bellsouth is my ISP. I connect through a linksys router (too lazy to look at brand, this issue started with no abnormal changes to any settings, other than uninstalling mcafee cause it blows, and yes that's probably what screwed all this up). GW cannot connect, AVG anti-virus cannot connect to the internet, there are a few others I can't remember, and about an hour ago eve online stopped working after a new patch but it could be unrelated, I'ma work on that in a second.

guess what, all of your advice was summed up with "check your connection". other than that, he needed to provide more information.

i'm assuming he's already tried to fix the problem since he said its been going on for a long time. doing a clean install is a last resort that usually fixes most problems.

Guess what, if "check your connection" was all the detail he needed to solve his problem he would have fixed it himself already. I'm assuming he came here to get more advice than, "if you can't figure it out yourself then reinstall Windows." Look, I'm not going to argue with you about it, but some people don't want to reformat and reinstall their OS whenver they have a problem.

@ the OP: if you open Control Panel ---> Network Connections, what do you see in there at a glance?

My local area network... look, not to be a jerk, butunless I am missing something VERY simple that has just not come into play before and I thus have no idea it exists, I've checked all the simple junk like that about a million times in addition to other stuff. Only thing I haven't bothered checking that I can think of is whether or not it affects other computers as none of them have games on them; although I am fairly certain it does not affect them as I haven't received any complaints of programs not connecting.

Ok, then why don't you tell us what you've checked. Obviously something is wrong. If you tell us that you've already checked everything then how do you expect anyone to try to help you?

If you really don't want to get detailed, have you considered using System Restore?

Well I just attempted to reply to that post and then lost everything I'd typed, so here it goes again.

I am not considering a system restore because to restore my computer to several months ago would be almost as good as reformatting, which would speed up my computer considerably and is just as viable an option.

I have checked (usually multiple times, but I am of course subject to errors) all router, firewall, network/internet, program, etc. settings. I have checked with somewhere around half a dozen programs for spyware, adware, viruses, etc. and my computer is completely clean. There are no unknown processes running on my computer (hijackthis, few other programs verified this). The problem still occurs whether I am set to DMZ or not. I've pinged the router and some other things, that all checks out. It seems (although it is hard to verify as I don't have exact IP/host addresses on most of them, but I'm fairly certain) that I can access the domains that the programs (e.g. AVG) want to access via IE or pinging with the command prompt, but the program itself cannot.

I haven't checked whether it occurs on other computers and I probably should; I'll get around to it.

The problem occurred after I uninstalled mcafee security center with firewall and AV, I've checked the registry and HD numerous times and I'm pretty sure I obliterated every trace of that damned thing (WHATEVERY DO GUYS, NEVER BUY THEIR PRODUCTS, THEY'RE CRAP)

Current/ongoing/past problems: all computers on the network must have subnet mask, DNS servers, IP addresses, and default gateways set manually. Otherwise, they cannot access the network/internet.

That's all I can think of at the moment...

That happens to me with this web site all the time. Really annoying.

That sounds like apps are still being blocked. I've seen other programs like Zone Alarm set registry keys to block applications, overriding the settings set by the Windows Firewall. Is it possible that McAffee's firewall didn't uninstall correctly? How would you feel about reinstalling it in an attempt to repair the registry changes it might have made? Do you have anything to lose?

That would help to narrow it down to the PC or the router.

Ok, so DHCP on your router isn't working properly. Are you certain that you have it turned on and configured properly on the router?

That last part is an ongoing problem happening long before this one arose. Manually assigning stuff simply circumvented it, I really don't feel like messing with and possibly screwing things up more unless you think it could solve this one. As for the uninstall improperly, I'm pretty sure I blasted everything out; I didn't think of reinstalling to fix things, let me try that now.

EDIT: Nope, won't let me reinstall without buying it again and screw that. I found a few hundred more registry keys that I deleted. Also, it's not that I didn't do a "clean" uninstall (I add removed programs and all that junk) it's just that mcafee is such a bad company/product that their idea of fun is leaving half a million registry keys and files all over your computer. The amount of keys with "connection" or "network" in them kind of sucked, I'll see if this fixed the problem when I'm able to reboot (I'm DLing something). I did not of course follow the CLSIDs listed in the keys as there were simply too many, I hope deleting the keys would fix anything that they caused.

Mcafee is junk, its a very tough bugger to get rid of one you have it. In fact there are a lot of reason to hate it but I won't get into those because its behind the doors politics. anyways as you have pointed out they do a very poor job of uninstalling all the things that they install. You might be able to search around for a good cleaning tool that is designed to remove the installation of Mcafee. In the mean time it is possible that the removal was not entirely successful and may have messed up your net socks. So you can try this as just something off the wall.

Start > Run > cmd

netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot.

Insulting you? Oh, please. Get over yourself. If you're not mature enough to handle someone disagreeing with you without taking it personally, then I don't know what to tell you. All I said is that "reinstall Windows" usually means that you've failed at troubleshooting, which is the truth.

Please understand that many years ago I started my career as a technician for a large company. "Reinstall Windows" was the solution to just about every problem for all of the technicians that weren't qualified to be doing their job. There are very few (data corruption caused by hardware problems, virii, etc.) problems that can't be solved if you know what you're doing and take proper troubleshooting steps. I get really tired of seeing "reinstall Windows" suggested in forums to solve every problem under the sun when there are usually better and faster solutions.

Yes, "reinstall Windows" will solve pretty much any software-related problem...just like "buy a new car" will magically repair your automotive problems. However, it's seldom necessary except in extreme cases. The OP got fed up with troubleshooting. That doesn't mean the problem couldn't have been fixed.

I can't log into the game. Don't know if this is the right topic, but maybe.. And don't know if this is a global problem.
